Whether you are recovering from a minor injury or a body modification, it is vital to keep an eye out for a possible wound infection. Actually, the risk of infection increases due to certain reasons including medications, chronic conditions, psychosocial factors, and poor wound care hygiene practices.

Even if you are taking all of the right steps to prevent an infection, there are some factors beyond your control which can lead to the same. For instance, the presence of microorganisms like bacteria around you can infiltrate the wound. These can multiply and damage your skin’s tissues, leading to systemic illness and a severe delay in the healing process.

Hence, it is advised to notice every sign your skin shows up. Here is a list of signs you need to be aware of;

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Fluid Drainage

Usually, it is normal to have some fluid drainage from the incision area. This means is clear or slightly yellow-colored fluid is draining out from your wound, you don’t need to worry.

However, if the drainage fluid is green, cloudy, or foul smelling, it indicated toward infection. If detected in early stage, wound drainage can be managed using absorbent dressings such as hydrocolloids or negative pressure therapy. But it still recommended contacting health care provider before you treat the infection.

Continual or Increased Pain

Whether it is about an injury or surgery, pain is common. And it is commonly subsided with the healing period. Initially, pain medications can be considered, but you should stop taking them comfortably over time. Now if even after a reasonably good time and following your doctor’s wound care directions, the pain is not reducing, you need to worry a little. Yes, it may be a sign of infection.

Redness and Swelling

Usually, redness is normal at the wound site. But if this doesn’t diminish over time, or simply if your wound continues to be red, this is a warning sign of a wound infection. Similarly, if swelling persists near the wound site, you could have an infection.

Malaise

This one is a quite common non-specific sign of infection. In this case, there is always a feeling of tiredness and a lack of energy. One might not feel capable of completing normal activities or you might feel sleepy more than usual. If you are recovering from surgery, there are chances you will feel a little better day by day, without an infection. But for those who contract an infection will become exhausted.

Fever

In some cases, one might suffer from the fever which further causes headaches and decrease in appetite. Are you running a low-grade fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or less? If yes, then it is fine. But if your temperature reaches 101 degrees or more, it indicates toward a wound infection. And it is highly recommended to consult your physician as soon as possible. Majorly, your fever is due to an open or chronic wound. Your doctor might suggest you use antiseptics in the form of impregnated dressings.

So, if any of the following signs are evident, it is advised to see your doctor as soon as possible. Don’t delay!
