Eczema is a medical condition that causes the skin to become inflamed and irritated. The common signs of eczema are rashes and redness occurring on the scalp and cheek. Eczema is a common skin condition affecting 31.6 million U.S. populations, according to National Eczema Association. The report further says that one out of every 3 children has moderate to severe eczema.

While eczema is not curable, there are certain topical medications and doctor’s prescription to heal it. Besides these medications, there are many alternative methods that are believed to be efficient for eczema. You can combine these alternative methods with the doctor prescribed methods.

Alternative Topical Treatments:

Coconut oil:

Many researchers have proved that coconut oil can minimize the amount of staph bacteria on the skin, which in turn reduces the chance of infection. You can apply coconut oil once or twice a day after wetting your skin. Virgin or organic coconut oil is beneficial as they are free from chemicals that can aggravate the skin condition.

Sunflower oil:

Sunflower oil strengthens the skin’s barrier function and keep it moisturized. The oil is also rich in anti-inflammatory properties. However, the oil is recommended for the adult skin only. Apply the sunflower oil on a damp skin once or twice a day. Avoid applying sunflower oil if you are allergic to sunflower seeds. Cardiospermum is also used to ease inflammation, itch and bacteria on the skin.

Mind and Body Therapies:

Stress:

Stress is said to be the primary cause of atopic dermatitis or AD flares. Although there is no proven connection between stress and eczema, many medical professional believe that body produces inflammation in a stressful event. The inflammation further triggers eczema.

Mind Approach:

According to many experts, there is strong link between the mind and skin conditions. Psychodermatology is widely practiced to minimize the patient’s stress, anxiety and other “mind upsetting” things. The technique is common in Europe and the U.S. Some of the parts of pshychodermtology are hypnosis, biofeedback, mediation, and acupressure. In acupressure, a physical pressure is applied to the various points on the body to release the energy.

Massage:

Massage helps in skin relaxation, which in turns eases eczema flares. Consider a massage therapist who is experienced and approved in working with patients with non-contagious skin conditions. Before scheduling an appointment, make sure the therapist use the oils and lotions compatible for your skin. You can bring your own lotion and oils, if you are unsure.
