5 Health Benefits of Tea Tree Oil

Melaleuca oil which is commonly known as Tea Tree Oil (TTO) is extracted from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia plant. The tea tree oil has remarkable medicinal benefits which can cure multiple health problems from acne to lung congestion.

The following blog discusses few ways in which tea tree oil can be beneficial for you.

Tea Tree is a natural antibacterial, antiseptic, antifungal, antimicrobial, expectorant and antiviral which can treat fungal as well as bacterial infections. 

  1. Treats Acne
    Tea tree oil being a natural antiseptic can cure acne by killing the bacteria that causes it and also disinfect the pores.

    How to use?

    • Simply take a drop of TTO on moistened cotton ball and apply it gently apply it over the acne before you go to bed.
       
    • Next morning wash the face with lukewarm water. Repeat daily for better results.

    You can also make face pack by mixing 4 or 5 drops of TTO with 1 teaspoon of raw honey and apply for 15 minutes.

    Tea tree oil being an antifungal can treat dandruff.

    How to use?

    • There are shampoos available with TTO as an ingredient. You can use them to wash hair once or twice during a week.
       
    • Otherwise, you can also add 1 or 2 drops of TTO per ounce to the shampoo you use in routine for washing hair.

    Tea Tree Oil can also treat itchy and dry scalp.

    The antiseptic and antibacterial nature of tea tree oil can help in healing boils faster and even prevent the skin from getting infected.
    • Take few drops of TTO on a cotton ball and apply it on the affected area.

    In addition, it helps reduce scarring and skin spots left by boils.
     

  4. Treats Warts
    Tea Tree oil is a powerful antiviral and antiseptic that can cure warts, the small bumps which are a result of viral infection. 

    How to use?

    • Take 4 or 5 drops of TTO and add to it 1 tablespoon of almond or olive oil.
       
    • Apply the mixture on the affected portion of the skin.
       
    • Leave it for about 2 hours and then wash off with warm water.
       
    • Carry the same procedure for few weeks.

    TTO can even treat genital warts effectively.
     

  5. Fights Vaginal Infection
    Tea tree oil’s antifungal and antibacterial properties makes it a powerful remedy for treating vaginal infections like vaginitis, bacterial vaginosis, and even yeast infections. This can even get you rid of the pungent vaginal odor.

    How to use?

    • Mix 2 or 3 drops of TTO in some amount of warm water. Wash the vagina at least once in a day for few weeks.
       
    • You can also mix TTO with 3 cups of white vinegar and pour the mixture in bathtub filled with lukewarm water and soak yourself for around 20 to 30 minutes.

    Pregnant women should not use TTO without doctor’s consultation.
