Different types of Psoriasis and their Proper Diagnosis

Various types of Psoriasis can contaminate a person. Plus, their diagnosis and the treatment largely depend on the symptoms of any particular type of Psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a kind of skin disorder which has different forms. Plus, several other skin disorders are very much like Psoriasis which is why it is important to perform proper diagnosis to figure out whether the lesions are due to Psoriasis or the causes are something different.

Hence, by properly diagnosing a problem it becomes easier to implement the right treatment.

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease that has become common in recent times. About one to three percent of the population suffers from this chronic skin disease. Usually, there are hardly any symptoms, but few people may experience severe itching. As the skin becomes irritated, abrasions start forming on the affected area. Some of the common areas affected by Psoriasis are knees, elbows, soles, and scalp. Patients suffer for a long time from this disease and recurring exacerbations are also common.

Causes of Psoriasis

Genetic - If you’re contracted with psoriasis, possibilities are there that someone in your family may have had it too in the past. This is because there is a genetic link for psoriasis. One out of 3 people with psoriasis report they have a relative with the disease. Even researchers explain that up to 10% of the general population may inherit one or more genes that affect them to psoriasis, though only 2% to 3% of people with the gene actually develop the disease.

Environmental Triggers - Certain environmental factors may causer the psoriasis in genes, causing the infection to become active. Although, these environmental triggers vary from person to person but what triggers psoriasis to develop in one may have no effect on someone else.

Some triggers known to impact psoriasis symptoms include:

  • Stress
  • Injury to skin (cuts, scrapes, bug bites, severe sunburns)
  • Infection (such as strep throat or thrush)
  • Certain medications (including lithium, quinidine, indomethacin)

Various Types of Psoriasis

There are different types of Psoriasis:

Plaque Type: The most common type is the plaque type. In this type, the plaques enlarge gradually and the lesions are symmetric with infection in familiar locations such as scalp, elbows and gluteal cleft.

Inverse Psoriasis: This type of Psoriasis attacks skinfolds such as the navel, groin and the sub-mammary regions. Due to the location of these lesions, they are more moist instead of being scaly.

Guttate Psoriasis: This type of Psoriasis is found more in adolescents and kids. The disease usually follows any type of upper respiratory tract infection and signs such as scaling lesions easily help to diagnose this type of Psoriasis.

Pustular Psoriasis: This is centralized more in soles and palms. The lesions are red pustules and of different sizes. Fever generally accompanies this type of Psoriasis that can lasts for many days.

Diagnosis

For diagnosis of any type of psoriasis, physical examination is done along with checking patient’s clinical history. In case this basic diagnosis fails, some common characteristics that help in diagnosis include bleeding from lesions when disturbed, scaled and silvery formation of the lesions, symmetrical nature of the lesions and lesions on back of legs and on elbows are examined.

Treatment

There are five categories of treatment, including phototherapy, biologics, topical and combination of these.

Steroids and calcineurin inhibitors are used in topical treatment, while in phototherapy UVB light and laser treatment can be used. Likewise, in systemic treatments acitretin and methotrexate are used.
