- Rinse with saline before symptoms attack
Head off allergies by treating them before you feel the symptoms, recommends Nathanael Horne, MD, of New York Medical College. Spritzing a saline rinse into your nose every day to wash away pollen is one significant way. While this method won't essentially replace medication, it could reduce your necessity for medicines. In one study, people who rinsed their sinuses twice a day regularly for three to six weeks reported less nasal congestion as compared to those who didn't.
- Try butterbur
If you want to take the natural path, butterbur has proved to have the best track record among herbs used for pollen allergies. Some studies suggest that it can act as antihistamines that are effective for nasal symptoms, with no accompanying sleepiness.
- Cook with Turmeric
Turmeric, a spice common in Indian cuisine comprises of Curcumin. It may help reduce allergy symptoms, may behave as a decongestant, and treat cold. "It seems to be as effective as some drugs for certain conditions," said Bharat Aggarwal, PhD, professor of experimental therapeutics at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
- Clean Your Living Environment
Remove allergy-causing pollen and other infectants from the air around you by investing in an air purification system with UV & negative ion filter. Clean your carpets, upholstery, curtains and all other woolen stuffs. Replace carpet with non-toxic wool, cork flooring or non-toxic hardwood if possible. Also, get rid of the mess which collects allergens! Remember” A clean living environment is a GREEN living environment”.
- Wash Away Allergens
With you come along small pieces of the outside world. When you step out of your home, your clothes, shoes, hair, and skin get covered with tiny particles. Taking bath or washing your hands with disinfectant and changing your clothes will aid washing away any allergens. Also, placing your shoes at the door will help keep you from collecting allergens through your home.

A mask can prevent allergens from getting into your air when you can’t avoid certain allergy triggers, like during mowing, raking, or vacuuming. An N95 respirator mask, which is available at almost all the drugstores and medical supply stores, will help block 95% of small particles, such as pollen and other allergens.
- Eat a Healthy Diet
A study found that children who ate a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, and nuts, especially grapes, oranges, apples, and tomatoes had fewer allergy symptoms. Researchers are still trying to figure out the connection between diet and nasal allergies, however eating a healthy diet is known to do the body a world of good in general. Try adding at least one fresh fruit and vegetable to every meal.
- Drink More Fluids
Last but not the least, if you’re feeling congestion or have postnasal drip from your allergies, drinking more water, juice, or other fluids can be easing. Drinking extra liquid can help thin the mucus in your nasal passages and may give you some relief. Hot fluids like teas, broth, or soup may be soothing in particular because they add the benefits of steam.
