Lice & Scabies – What Should You Know

Lice live on the scalp of humans and attach their larvae to the hair strands. Scabies mites live underneath the skin and burrow tunnels to lay eggs. That’s the basic difference but there’s a whole lot more.

Let’s read on a little more about these two infections –

1. Is It Lice Or Scabies?

If the itching happens on all the hairy parts of the body at all times of the day, then in all probability its lice. Scabies will generally infect the head or neck and the itching is at its peak during the night. 

Careful examination of the scalp might show lice eggs or nits on the hair shafts.

Scabies can’t be seen with the human eye, but a red rash in a line is an indication of the mite’s burrows.

2. Treatment for Lice

It can be terminated with special shampoos and lotions that kill the live lice and break the cycle of eggs.

The treatment is repeated after a week to kill any eggs that might have hatched later. All bed linens and clothes need to be washed.

3. Treatment for Scabies

Consult a doctor right away if the infection is severe and let him prescribe a scabicide for you. It is important to follow the instructions carefully to ensure that all the live mites are eradicated.
