Rosacea is a skin condition being characterized by redness and small pus-filled blisters. Nearly 16 million Americans have rosacea. A rosacea patient has to take care of his or her skin by avoiding sun exposure, skin products, alcohol and extreme temperature. These triggers can aggravate the condition. In other words, aftercare is essential for a rosacea patient to manage the skin condition.

Dried or Fermented Foods:

Dried or fermented foods are the prime source of histamine, a body chemical which causes inflammation or itching to defend the body from infection or injury. Since histamine triggers itching, it is not good for your rosacea-affected skin.

Eating dried fruit like dried apricots, figs, raisins, and dates can trigger a reaction. Also avoid picked or smoked meats, sauerkraut, cheese, and kimchee.


Foods that contain vinegar are also high in histamine and are likely to trigger rosacea flare-ups. Such foods are mayonnaise, pickles, chili sauce, and olives. So you should avoid taking such foods.


Drinking alcohol, particularly wine and beer, often aggravates rosacea as it triggers the flares. This is because alcohol causes your blood vessels to relax and widen. It may also prompt the production of inflammatory proteins, which in turn causes redness. Therefore, limit your intake of alcohol to minimize the severity or frequency of your rosacea flare-ups—or avoid alcohol totally.

Vegetables and Fruits:

Some veggies are high in histamine and can make your rosacea worse. These vegetables include eggplant, mushroom, spinach, tomatoes, and avocados. Besides, fruits like oranges and other citrus fruits, bananas and red plums are also found to trigger rosacea flares.

What to Eat in Rosacea?

Not all foods are bad for rosacea. Some foods can help you manage the symptoms of rosacea. For example, berries are good food for the patients as they contain fiber and antioxidants. Fresh veggies like leafy greens, broccoli, green beans, and cauliflower are the best as they are high in fiber. Fishes like salmon have high omega 3 content which is good for rosacea. Whole grains like brown rice, quinoa and millet contain anti-inflammatory properties. Besides, they lack added sugars.

Apart from Diet, Take Care of Your Rosacea Skin

Besides being careful towards your diet, you should take care of your skin. A minor damage can lead to flare up. Use sunscreen to avoid sun exposure while natural moisturizers like coconut oil can help provide the skin with nutrients. Avoid using the skin care products that include witch hazel, menthol, camphor, fragrances, alcohol and eucalyptus oil.

Above all, learn your triggers as each person has different triggers that aggravate their rosacea.
