What if scabies is left untreated?

If scabies is left untreated, it may have many short and long-term effects on your skin. These side effects may not be good for your health in long run.

Short-term effects:

Intense itching is obviously hard to resist scratching. However, continued scratching may lead your skin prone to catch other secondary infections. It may break your skin surface and cause open sores that may easily develop bacterial infections. The infection called impetigo is a very common complication caused by scabies.

Besides that, scabies can also worsen the pre-existing skin conditions, including eczema. If you don't treat it, the chances of transmitting these mites to any person are also high. The regular untreated scabies can further develop more complicated crusted scabies - in which thousands of mites will infest all parts of the body. What could be worse than that? Unlike common scabies, rashes produced by crusted scabies don’t itch and it usually affects people with a very weak immune system.

Transmission to Others

People with untreated scabies can easily spread the condition to uninfested people. Anyone who is in close contact with the infested person is more likely to contract scabies. A person carrying crusted scabies is more contagious as compared to a person infested with ordinary scabies. This is because of the skin of a person with crusted scabies may carry up to 2 million live mites.

In most cases, scabies occurs by direct skin-to-skin contact with an infested person. But adult female itch mites are able to survive for up to 2 to 3 days even without the human body in hot, humid conditions. So, these mites may be available on the furniture, clothes, towels, and bed sheets used by a person with scabies.

Long-term effects:

If not treated for a very long time, scabies can led to some serious problems like kidney damage. This extreme condition is termed as postinfectious glomerulonephritis (PIGN). It manifests as mildly impaired kidney function to full-blown kidney failure. PIGN occurs due to the swelling of small blood vessels in the kidneys. The symptoms of the severe PIGN condition include blood-colored or brown urine, high blood pressure, decreased urination, swelling of the hands, feet, lower legs and face.

In extreme cases, a localized bacterial skin infection caused by scabies may even get into your bloodstream. This condition is called septicemia and it may become very dangerous if it reaches an advanced stage. You may even get life-threatening shock along with multiple organ system failures. The signs and symptoms of this condition include fever, sweating, decreasing blood pressure, increased confusion, rapid heart, and breathing rate.
