Things That Make Your Psoriasis Worse

Do you have psoriasis? If so, you know how painful and frustrating the condition can be. Life is not easy with red, raise patches of skin and intense itching. You have flares lasted for the months. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease caused by the rapid growth of the skin cells.

On the top of that, psoriasis is not curable as the treatments can only prevent cells overgrowth and provide relief. It is also challenging for a doctor due to the symptoms varying from person to person, requiring him a trial and error method to find the suitable treatment.

Therefore, managing your psoriasis is as important as your medications and treatment. Here we have listed the things you must avoid to keep your psoriasis in control.

Many physicians have suspected a strong link between stress and psoriasis. Since psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition, your body signals your immune cells to fight when you are under stress. Taking stress triggers the flare up.

Therefore, you should manage your stress by working out, relaxing your muscles, deep breathing, eating well and taking a break.

Alcohol and Smoking:

Several studies have found that smoking and alcohol are the triggers of psoriasis. According to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, psoriasis can be aggravated with even a non-light beer or two to three drinks per week.

Jessica Kaffenberger, MD, a dermatologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, says that smokers can have most severe case of psoriasis.

Certain drugs used for the treatment of other conditions can aggravate your psoriasis. For example, Beta-blockers are used to lower blood pressure, psychiatric disorders and antimalarial medicines, but they can trigger flare ups. Besides, some OTC non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like naproxen can also produce inflammation.  Make sure to ask your physician before trying new medication or treatment, even if it is herbal or natural. Many doctors recommend consultation for a prescribed drug also.

Cold and Dry Air:

Weather can be a psoriasis trigger, especially when it’s a cold, dry air. This is because cold weather and low humidity can damage skin cells. The skin becomes dry and crack which can make your psoriasis worse. So, always use a skin friendly moisturizer and apply lotion within 3 minutes of taking shower to lock the moisture in your skin.

Skin Injury:

If you have active psoriasis, an injured skin can be your next psoriasis affected spot. It is known as Koebner phenomenon. Your skin trauma can be caused by vaccinations, bruises, sunburns, surgeries, bug bites and scrapes.

Therefore, always wear protective clothing and use sunscreen to avoid getting injuries or rashes on your skin.

So these are the things that can make your psoriasis worse.  You can avoid or minimize them by following the set of precautions like avoid taking stress, keeping up skin care routine and personal hygiene, take a healthy diet and use the medications after consulting your doctor.
