Understanding the Differences between Eczema and Scabies

Lesions, swollen skin, blisters and bumps, and itching are the skin conditions you may have at some point of your life. Surprisingly, they are the common signs of most of the diseases, particularly of scabies and eczema. In other words, you can easily confused one with the other, no matter how different they are in nature. Therefore, it is essential that you know the differences about scabies and eczema along with the facts.

Understanding the Differences between Eczema and Scabies

Basic Difference between Eczema and Scabies:

 Scabies is basically a contagious disease that is caused by mites burrowing inside your skin. On the other hand, eczema is a noninfectious skin condition caused by dry skin, allergens and environmental factors.

Scabies is Contagious, Eczema is Not:

Eczema is not infectious, you can’t get if from anybody or giving it to anybody else, even through a direct contact. On the other hand, scabies is highly infectious and it can be transferred by any form of physical contact.

Difference in Treatments

Scabies is treated with Permethrin cream, lindane lotion, Crotamiton and ivermectin which are used to kill the mites while relieving the itch. Eczema, on the other hand, is treated with topical corticosteroids, topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCIs) and oral medications. Apart from that, a physician may also prescribe the phototherapy, which make the patient exposes to the light and is conducted by medical professionals and acupuncture, supplements and stress reduction techniques.

Scabies is Curable While Eczema is Not:

Scabies is curable and it comes back only when you don’t follow the precautions including hygiene and avoiding contact with patients. But that can’t be said about eczema as it is not a treatable, though medications can keep it suppressed or under control. In other words, a person with eczema will have eczema for throughout the life.

Scabies is caused by Bugs While Exact Causes of Eczema are Still Unknown

It has been told earlier that scabies is caused by the mites lying under your skin. These tiny mites burrow into the skin and give eggs which multiply to create rashes and blisters. Eczema’s exact causes are still unknown, though many experts think that it is triggered by the combination of hereditary and environmental factors.

So, these are the differences between eczema and scabies you must know to have a better outlook on both skin conditions. It is better if you see your physician in case of severe condition, rather than treating it yourself at home.
