Do I Have Scabies or Eczema?

Do I Have Scabies or Eczema? Most skin diseases appear in the form of rashes though they vary in their texture and intensity. However, there are some skin diseases which are indeed quite difficult to distinguish from each other due to which the needful treatment may get delayed. One such similar set of diseases are eczema and scabies which look almost alike each other at the first notice. However, to ease things up for you, we’ve charted out some basic differences between the two —

1) Cause

Scabies, unlike eczema, is a mite borne disease where the mites excretes and lay eggs under the epidermal layer of the skin causing rashes which look like eczema. Eczema, on the hand, can be caused by a variety of reasons—changes in hormone level, chemicals, pollen grains or even stress.

2. Appearance

Unlike eczema which can affect anywhere and everywhere on the skin, especially on knees, elbows, face, upper chest and neck, scabies generally occurs only on the folded areas of the skin, and under the layers. The areas which get easily affected by scabies are breasts, waist, knees, buttocks, the male genital region and the shoulder blades.

While the eczema rashes appear like red patches, scabies appears as a series of borrows of minute bumps and blisters.

3. Identification

Identifying both these diseases as separate ones may be a bit difficult for you, but it isn’t such for a doctor. The doctor can, by inspecting a scrapped layer of the affected skin under a microscope, determine whether the person is suffering from eczema or scabies.

If a person is suffering from eczema, it can be identified by reviewing the patient’s medical history too, but it cannot be done alike in case of scabies.

4. Development

Eczema is a non contagious disease and hence, if you’re having the same, be rest assured, your loved ones won’t get infected from you. However, scabies is a contagious disease which spreads through mere physical contact. So, be careful!

5. Treatment

Although eczema poses to be a lesser threat than scabies, it is just the opposite. Eczema, unlike scabies is yet an incurable disease. Treatment is done for the same to reduce the inflammation and itching. However, in case of scabies, just massaging the prescribed cream, Dr. Scabies for example, atop the infection can provide relief.
