Do you have a prickly feeling after scabies treatment?

Scabies infestation is caused by the Sarcoptic scabies mite. It is characterized by intense, nocturnal itching - as these mites are active at night. Infestation occurs when the scabies mite burrows into the skin and lays eggs and the hatching process causes intense itching. Prescription medication is necessary to treat the infestation. However, you may still feel the prickly sensation even after the treatment is complete.

You may get re-infected even after the treatment, because the mites may be alive or even on the non-living things in your house. Generally, scabies infestations abate within one month of prescription treatment. There are no Food and Drug Administration approved over-the-counter infestation remedies, so continued treatment by a physician is required. The most common prescribed medicament is the Permethrin cream, 5 percent (Elimite).

Nonetheless, in some cases, the prickling indicates some allergic reactions to the mites and their faeces, so itching can continue for several weeks after treatment. But if the itching is still severe and continues even after the treatment, chances are that you have got infested again.

Here are some of the common reasons why itching persists even after the treatment, and certain ways you may avoid scabies from reoccurring. It’s not just the medicament you have to completely depend upon, you need to maintain proper cleanliness and hygiene to completely get rid of scabies.

Disinfecting Furnishings

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention does not recommend the use of any insecticide sprays or fumigants on bedding, clothing, or furnishings. This is because the scabies mite usually does not survive for more than two or three days away from the skin. However, it is necessary to regularly wash linen, towels, all clothing used by the sufferer within three days prior to treatment. Besides that, no extra washing, high-water temperatures or toxic chemicals are needed to kill the - as these mites do not survive normal washing procedures. Once you have washed the clothing or bedsheets, there is no need to be worried about getting infected from the same washed clothing.

Appearance and Discomfort of Nodules

The presence of nodules on the penis, vagina, armpits, breast, and skin folds from the scabies infestation may continue for several months. You can also consult your physician about the steroidal creams or injections to relieve discomfort caused by nodules. To prevent additional side effects, it’s better than the treatment is performed only by the treating physician, for both initial treatment and symptoms. You may get some over-the-counter medications, but these medicaments do not completely eradicate the infestations like prescription-grade treatments. So, on;y reply on what your physician prescribes.

Scabies Treatments for Significant Others

Infected individuals not only get themselves treated but also notify their family after receiving treatment. It is essential to notify your significant others and other family members who may have had skin-to-skin contact with an infected person. Individuals who have had prolonged skin-to-skin contact should also be examined and treated by a doctor to avoid reinfestation. When a person becomes infested again, the infection can spread rapidly. The treatment is 95-percent effective with the first administration. But if people around the patient are infected, the infestation can reoccur. So, you need to be very careful.

Over-The-Counter Medication

According to recent studies, the older treatments such as lindane, have been found to be too toxic to the body. Earlier some sulphur ointments and anti-itch, over-the-counter remedies were also used to relieve symptoms of itching and scabbing but these are not effective for treating infestations completely. Only physician-prescribed scabicides and antibiotics are required to kill the mites and to heal infection from burrowing mites. The more-effective treatments for scabies infestations include oral ivermectin pills. Although this medication is not widely used for individual scabies cases, it’s beneficial for larger outbreaks.
