FAQs - Dr. Scabies Frequently Asked Questions

SCABIES DIAGNOSIS

scabies mite1. What is scabies?

Scabies is a contagious skin disease, caused by infestation with the parasitic itch mite, sometimes called the “seven-year-itch” because it was hard to get rid of before modern medications. They usually appear in the folds of your skin, but can be found on any part of your body. It is a common condition that your doctor can easily treat.

2. How do scabies mites live?

The tiny mites burrow into the skin layers where they live and reproduce. They may be located anywhere on the body, but usually are not found on the face or scalp. How do scabies mites develop? The adult female mite burrows into the skin, feeds on cell fluids, and lays two or three eggs a day inside the burrow. The eggs hatchin three or four days and the young mites grow to mature egg-laying adults in seven to ten days.

3. How long do scabies mites live?

Each mite lives about two months on the human host. During this time, a female can lay up to 120 eggs. Off the human host, mites can survive three to four days under the best conditions, but usually theywill live only a few hours.

4. How do we get scabies?

By skin-to-skin contact with someone who has scabies or by sharing their infested clothing, towels, or bedding.

5. Will human scabies mites live on pets?

No. This type of scabies mite can only live and reproduce on humans.

6. Can scabies mites hop, jump, or fly?

No. These mites can only crawl. They crawl about one inch per minute on the skin surface.

7. What are the symptoms of scabies?

Itching is the most noticeable symptom and is usually more severe at night. Scratching many cause bleeding resulting in blood spotting of bed clothing and sheets. There is usually a skin rash consisting of red, itchy bumps. Symptoms may not appear for four to six weeks after infestation. During this time, the body builds up a sensitivity to the mites before itching and rash will appear.

8. How do we know when we have scabies?

When symptoms as described above appear, see a doctor. The doctor will then determine if the condition is due to scabies or something else.

9. How Do I know If It is Scabies Rash

If you answer YES to all of these questions, it is likely that you have scabies:

SCABIES IN ADULTS

  • Do you recall any exposure (skin-to-skin contact or direct contact with clothing, bedding and towels) to people afflicted with scabies?
  • Have you been to places with high incidence of scabies or areas with recent scabies outbreak?
  • Do you see red, pimple-like rash (sometimes filled with pus) in between fingers or web spaces, flexor areas of the wrists, arm pits, abdomen, buttocks, breasts and genitals?
  • Do you see fine, thread-like, zigzagging, burrow-like lines that are sometimes reddish, greyish white or skin colored?
  • If you are a woman, do you see rash on the skin of your areola and nipples?
  • If you are a man, do you see rash on the tip, penis shaft and scrotum area?
  • Does the rash itch intensely at night or after a hot bath?

SCABIES IN BABIES AND CHILDREN

  • Do you see pink-brown nodules in the face, neck, and scalp, in between the fingers, wrists, elbows, and palms of the hands, soles of feet, armpits, navel, thighs and external genitalia?
  • Does the rash look like small, solid round lumps no bigger than 0.5 cm or sometimes blisters filled with pus?
  • Does your baby behave in agitated way and seems to move in all directions as if trying to scratch their backs especially at night time?
  • Was there a reported case of scabies in daycare center or school?
  • Does your child experience distress, irritation and sleeplessness due to intense itching?
  • Does the rash won’t go away even after applying topical lotion or ointment for itching?

10. Can Borax Treat Scabies?

Borax is a boron compound found in many household laundry and cleaning detergents. It may be effective in cleaning/disinfecting clothes and other things inside the house and its uses may go far beyond that, such as being used as pesticide and weed killer but there are no concrete evidences or studies that it can treat scabies. Experimenting on the use of borax that are not included on its indications is dangerous. Although borax is a natural product, it does not mean it is safe. Gloves are still needed in handling it and definitely not a good idea to apply on scabies rash and lesions as it may cause further irritation.

11. Is permethrin a prescription drug?

Permethrin belongs to a group of drugs called pyrethrins. Pyrethrin is commonly used in industrial and agricultural settings as “pesticides.” Permethrin 5% cream will need a doctor’s prescription to buy it. Read More: Is permethrin a prescription drug?

The intensity of health effects from permethrin will depend on how someone is exposed to it. When people get permethrin on their skin, they may have irritation or tingling, burning and itching at that spot. If permethrin accidentally gets caught in the eyes, it can cause redness, pain or burning. If people ingest permethrin it could cause sore throat, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. People that have breathed in permethrin have had irritation in the nose and lungs, difficulty breathing, headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.

Due to known harsh effects of permethrin and other pharmaceutical scabicides, Dr. Scabies encourages everyone to choose healthier and safer alternative. Dr. Scabies Solutions are formulated in such a way it will not allow the scabies mites to develop resistance nor cause any changes on the body that will compromise its safety.

12. Is permethrin a carcinogen?

Permethrin was classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as "not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans" in 1991. This means that IARC could not decide whether or not permethrin can cause cancer. The U.S. EPA decided that permethrin was "likely to be carcinogenic to humans" if it was ingested. This decision was based on the structure of permethrin, what happens to it in the body, laboratory tests that caused tumors in mice and evidence of tumors in rats.

At the time of EPA's last evaluation of the carcinogenic potential of permethrin in 1989, they classified permethrin as Group C-a Possible Human Carcinogen. The World Health Organization reported that permethrin increased the frequency of lung tumors in female mice in 2 out of 3 studies conducted. In a study on the effects of permethrin on breast cancer cells, researchers found that permethrin increases the expression of a gene that is involved with proliferation of cells in the mammary gland. Permethrin has also been linked to prostate cancer; in a study of farmers and professional pesticide applicators, permethrin was shown to increase the risk of prostate cancer in men with a family history of prostate cancer.

13. Can Re-infestation Occur After Using Permethrin Cream?

Yes, re-infestation can still occur after using permethrin cream.

Implacable nodules and blisters are quite common even if the mites have been reduced. However, newer burrows on the skin are certainly a sign of active infestation or re-infestation. Scabies is certainly curable however you must not suffice to one form of treatment because resistance to permethrin appears to be on the rise. It would be best to use natural treatments like Dr. Scabies, in order to get rid of the underlying mites without worrying of developing resistance over prolonged use.

Scabicides in topical cream form preparation like permethrin do not have deep penetrating, cleansing action that can easily cover the entire body, from head to foot without missing important areas. It may kill the scabies mites inside the burrows but it cannot exterminate mites totally. It is also difficult for the topical cream to unclog the burrows from dead mites, eggs and fecal pellets, thus, re-infestation and post-scabies syndrome are likely to occur.

14. Signs of FAILED Permethrin Treatment

It is utterly frustrating and depressing to find out after doing rigorous and meticulous routines of applying permethrin cream and cleaning the surroundings that treatment has FAILED! These are the things that need be observed in order to detect failed permethrin treatment:

15. How to cure scabies fast at home?

Scabies treatment that can provide fast cure and rapid relief are of essence to people with scabies and their families. And of course, with special consideration to ease of use, convenience of doing it at home and non-invasiveness in nature. Apparently, the market is filled with different scabicides manufactured by pharmaceutical companies. Even if these pharma-grade products are approved by FDA, it does not mean they are completely safe to use. It goes without saying that benefits of these medicines are more important than any minor side effects. Unfortunately, not all side effects are tolerable, it can be mild, moderate, severe and even life-threatening.

Dr. Scabies dares to be different by defying the norms set by gigantic pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Scabies’ proprietary solutions are formulated to have the highest strengths that are still within the safe zone according to the standards of Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of United States (HPUS) and FDA. Our products really far exceed anything out there and really deliver the results strengthened through evidence-based practices and product tests. The premium blends of Dr. Scabies products comprising of sulfur and essential plant oils can treat other skin conditions such as athlete’s foot, eczema, ringworm, parasites, and all kinds of mite infestations.

In comparison to widely known treatments such as permethrin cream 5%, Dr. Scabies can efficiently destroy both mites and eggs whereas permethrin does not end up killing all the scabies eggs which is a common occurrence in relapsed cases.

2. What does the “X” stands for in its Sulfur Strength?

The “X” refers to the potency scale in which it indicates how many times an active ingredient was diluted. A solution that is more dilute is described as having a higher potency, and more dilute substances are considered by homeopaths to be stronger and deeper-acting remedies. Other sulfur preparations like soap, lotion or shampoo has potency of 1X only, whereas Dr. Scabies liquid soap and cream have 8X and concentrated bath solution has 12X.

3. How Dr. Scabies is Different from Pharmaceutical Scabicides?

Dr. Scabies as compared to pharmaceutical scabicides, is an ideal scabicide that is effective against adult mites and eggs, easily applicable, non-sensitizing, non-irritating, non-toxic, and economical. The homeopathic preparations employed by Dr. Scabies potentized the active ingredients and diminished the toxicity of potentially hazardous materials thus making it considerably safe when administered properly. It does not in any way cause neurotoxicity nor pose threat to the environment like other medications do. The mechanisms of action of Dr. Scabies is parasiticidal, ovicidal, germicidal and fungicidal.

Dr. Scabies was found to be effective, well tolerated, and rapidly metabolized. Dr. Scabies initiates its parasiticidal and ovicidal actions by being directly absorbed through the parasite’s exoskeleton and their ova, then disrupts the sodium channel current, resulting in delayed repolarization, causing paralysis and death of the parasite in all stages.

Dr. Scabies liquid soap and bath solution as part of treatment, fill in what is lacking in most scabicidal medications. The liquid form is most advantageous in terms of coverage and penetration. It thoroughly penetrates the burrows and removes all the mite components from the skin – dead mite bodies, eggs and fecal pellets thus preventing re-infestation and post-scabies syndrome.

It contains monographs of drug ingredients used in homeopathic treatment.

Our claims are supported by testimonials of people who used Dr. Scabies products who were extremely satisfied with the results. To read more, go to Testimonials page.

7. What is Homeopathic Sulfur Preparation?

The homeopathic sulfur preparation is derived from unpolluted mineral sulfur and is used to treat several health conditions, especially skin problems. Through the process of “succusion” it is believed by homeopathic practitioners that this process leaves behind the image, essence, or spirit of the original compound in the water. The more times this process is repeated, or the more dilute the end-product, the stronger the homeopathic preparation, the more impact it could make it treating a specific condition.

It is different from the medication sulfur that physicians are likely to prescribe. These preparations are contain sulfur that are highly watered down doses to cure health conditions.

As a homeopathic remedy, sulfur is an extremely versatile medication that is used to cure a number of ailments. Hence, it is not surprising that people often and extensively turn to this homeopathic remedy for several dissimilar uses.

8. What are Essential Oils?

Everything about Dr. Scabies speaks of natural approach thus research and development identified specific formulation of purest Essential oils available to treat scabies. Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants generally extracted through the process of distillation, expression or solvent extraction. An oil is "essential" in the sense that it contains the characteristic fragrance of the plant that it is taken from.
Although they are fat soluble, they do not include fatty lipids or acids found in vegetable and animal oils. Essential oils are very clean, almost crisp, to the touch and are immediately absorbed by the skin. Pure, unadulterated essential oils are translucent and range in color from crystal clear to deep blue.

10. Itching after Scabies Treatment: Success or Failure?

Dr. Scabies gives a new definition to successful treatment. Whereas, Dr. Scabies, after carefully destroying mites and eggs, these dead components are expelled from the skin using the cleansing action of Dr. Scabies Liquid Soap and Bath Solution. This prevents the body from developing a response that elicits scabies-like symptoms as if the body is still expelling debris left by mites.

11. How to Manage Itching from Scabies

Dr. Scabies acts rapidly in alleviating the itch secondary to hypersensitivity reaction of the skin with scabies mite components, within 24 hours. Initial relief can be attained after first treatment and continues to improve on subsequent use of the products.

During the treatment course, substitute regular body soap with Dr. Scabies Liquid Soap and Bath Solution. Aside from sulfur, the liquid soap also contains thuja oil, green tea and cucumber extracts. Relevant physiologic actions of these natural ingredients are antipruritic, anti-parasitic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, counter-irritant and vermifugal while Dr. Scabies bath solution contains citronella, sunflower and tea tree oils that act as analgesic, antiseptic, bactericidal, fungicidal and insecticidal.

The rich blend of plant oils and extracts of these two products lock in moisture to prevent further irritation of the skin. Keeping the skin moisturized at all times is the first step in controlling itch because it reduces redness and itching and helps the skin heal.

Cold showers and cold packs also can offer relief. Avoid bathing in very hot water because it can exacerbate skin irritation and dryness.

DR. SCABIES APPLICATION

Dr. Scabies® simplified the treatment into a 6-step regimen:

  1. Take a shower (cold/lukewarm/warm) using Dr. Scabies® Homeopathic Scabies Soap 1-2 times daily. Avoid hot water to prevent the itch from aggravating. For children, keep the water at body temperature 98°F (37°C). Work the soap into a lather from head to toe. Make sure all the affected areas are covered, leave it on for 5-10 minutes. Rinse off the soap suds.
  2. After taking a shower, add 15-20 drops of Dr. Scabies® Homeopathic Scabies Solution to bath water (1-2 times daily). Soak the entire body especially the affected areas (avoid the eyes and mouth) for 20 minutes and air dry. Sponge bath is an alternative to tub bathing. Fill up a bucket or basin with water and add 15-20 drops of solution. Use a washcloth or sponge to bring up the water to the rest of the body. Discard or wash the sponge/cloth with soap and hot water after use.
  3. For spot treatment, apply Dr. Scabies® Homeopathic Scabies Cream 2-3 times a day (or as necessary) on every square inch of affected skin. Include the posterior ear folds, intergluteal cleft, umbilicus, skin folds, palms and soles, forehead, temples and scalp. Pay close attention to the areas beneath the nail plates and fingertips. Do not get the cream near the eyes or mouth. If excessive drying of the skin occurs, reduce the application of product or discontinue use.
  4. Each treatment with Dr. Scabies® should be followed by hot-wash laundering or dry cleaning of sheets and pillow cases and any clothes worn against the skin over the last week. Non-washable items should be sealed in a plastic bag and stored above 20° C for one week. Alternatively they can be frozen below -20° C for 12 hours.
The house should be thoroughly cleaned with regular household products. Fumigation or specialized cleaning is not required. Carpeted floors and upholstered furniture should be vacuumed. The vacuum bag should then be discarded and furniture covered by plastic or a sheet during treatment for 10-15 days.
  5. Use Dr. Repellent® Furniture Spray as convenient way to get rid of scabies mites on surfaces. How to Use: Shake well before each use. Hold the bottle 7 to 9 inches away from the surface and spray on the desired area until covered with mist. Allow to stand for 10-15 minutes to air dry. It offers protection up to 3 hours. Reapply as needed.
For complete peace of mind, spray Dr. Repellent® on clothes, doorknobs, telephones, light switches, table surfaces, chairs, rugs, tubs, shower handle, toilet seats, faucets, shower curtains, sinks, garbage cans, and other surfaces that came in contact with the infected person. For soft surfaces such as couches, mattresses, pillows, cushions, pet beds – it should be wrapped with plastic encasements prior to application.
Warnings: Keep Dr. Repellent® in a safe place where it is out of children’s reach. Make sure it is a cool, dark place to prevent the essential oils from oxidizing which may alter effectiveness.
Avoid contact with eyes, ingestion and inhalation. If product gets in the eye(s), flush with water. If irritation on skin occurs, wash with soap and water. If irritation persists, contact a physician. .
  6. Repeat the entire steps for 7-14 days until scabies is treated. Severe cases may take longer time to get treated. Avoid skipping any of the steps or missing a day. Family contacts with potential exposure to scabies should use Dr. Scabies® Homeopathic Scabies Soap as prophylaxis and must be directed to observe their skin daily until 6 weeks past the date of last potential exposure.

Return Policy

Prior to reporting a complaint on failed treatments or submitting a return request, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:

INDICATORS OF TREATMENT FAILURE

1. Any appearance of new burrows after completing the treatment is indicative of need for further therapy, although in re-infection symptoms of itching may recur before typical burrows have developed.

2. Itching persisting more than 2 weeks after treatment may reflect treatment failure, re-infection or allergic reaction to Dr. Scabies products.

TREATMENT FAILURE may result from:

  1. a.       Poor application techniques or inadequate application of Dr. Scabies products
  2. b.      Re-infestation from untreated body parts and untreated contacts or household members
  3. c.       Insufficient penetration or absorption of Dr. Scabies products into the skin due to improper usage or infected and crusted scabies lesions
  4. d.      Lack of proper environmental cleaning

If your self-assessment of treatment fell short in any of the important components of Scabies Control and Management, please consider continuing the treatment or start a re-treatment. Treating scabies is challenging but possible. Take few steps back and review what you have done so far and correct it.
