But, it is not always! There is no doubt in the fact that itching is among the immediate symptoms detected, when a person is infested with scabies. But, it is often accompanied with several other symptoms. For this, it is important to understand this contagious disease in detail, its causes, symptoms and treatment. Here is a short guide to give you a clear picture.

Scabies- The ‘seven’ year itch disease!

Being one of the most communicable skin conditions, Scabies is now one of the neglected tropical diseases too. It is known as a seven year itch due to the fact that its incidence rises and falls can occur up to as seven years (depending on the condition). It is said to be caused by infestation of tiny parasitic mites called Sarcoptes scabiei.
These are almost invisible to the naked eye. When they burrow into the skin, they make small tunnels beneath, breed there and lay eggs. It is the presence of these mites, their eggs, feces, etc., which generates rashes and intense itchiness.

Scabies- The contagious skin disorder!

The scabies mites can fly or jump, but they transmit from one person to another, making it highly contagious. There are two different mode of transmission:

  • Firstly, direct transmission occurs when a person comes into direct contact with a scabies patient. These mites transfer from person to person while they shake hands, sleep together or come in direct contact in any form.
  • Secondly, if a person gets in contact or use the objects being used by a diseased for a long time, he/ she can be infested soon. For example, the towel, bed sheets, furniture or the clothes used by the scabies patient can have the mites or their eggs attached. And if you use them, you are likely to be infected.

Often, scabies is seen as a condition popular in poor living conditions or the areas with lack of personal hygiene. However, there are no evidences to prove this to be true. In addition, it can happen to anyone. Leaving behind the bars of age, gender, race, etc., it is common worldwide.
