1. The Pathogenesis
The Human Scabies is caused by mites called Sarcoptes scabiei. The mites are 0.4mm to 0.3mm long and the male mites are half this size. The body is transparent and the mouth and the legs are brown.
2. How do they operate?
The mites penetrate the body by secreting enzymes that dissolve into the epidermal layer of the skin. There the mites eat the skin and keep penetrating further inside the human body. Once inside, a female starts burrowing immediately and looks for a place to lay the eggs. After a single mating, a female continues to lay eggs, till she completes her lifecycle of up to 6 weeks. The new mites hatch and this process goes on and on.
3. The Pathological Explanation
The host gets sensitized to the mites and their excretions in 3 to 6 weeks. A classic burrow is very difficult to find in a host due to the rapid expansion of the colony. The removal of mites by scratching and other responses that get immune leads to the decrease of the mites eventually.
