How to Manage Your Facial Eczema

1. Gentle Cleanser:

Avoid harsh soaps and cleanser as they can irritate or make your skin dry. Use a gentle non-soap cleanser. The products that contain hyaluronic acid and shea butter are good for sensitive skin. Don’t use the products having paraben, salicylic and glycolic acids, retinol, and fragrances. Here is a list of skincare products approved by the National Eczema Association for eczema patients.

2. Apply Moisturizer:

Make sure to apply moisturizer right after washing your face. Use non-scented moisturizer like Vaseline or thick creams. Greasy ointments should be used only at night.

3. Avoid Excessive Sun Exposure:

Sun can worsen your flare ups. So you should wear sunscreen. Choose the sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as it is good on sensitive skin. Make sure to wash off the sunscreen when you’re out of the sun as it can dry your face. Use a moisturizer after washing your face.

4. Be Mindful of the Temperature:

Steer clear of the places that are too hot or where you feel sweaty. Set the air or temperature at the right level as too dry or too humid can irritate your eczema. Use humidifier to balance the dry heat as it moisturized the air.

5. Avoid Hot Baths:

Given that extreme temperature can worsen your eczema, avoid taking hot baths. Use warm water instead. Limit your time in bath. After taking shower or bath, use a towel to pat dry your skin.

6. Stay Hydrated:

Drink 8-10 glass of water to keep your skin hydrated.

7. Take OTC Medications:

Several OTC medications like 1 percent hydrocortisone cream to control itch and redness. However, these creams are recommended for short-term use as prolonged use can thin the skin. If the OTC cream doesn’t respond, see your doctor.
