How to Treat Scabies in Kids?


It is quite discomforting to see your kids struggling with scabies. They go through intense itching, redness, rashes, blisters all over their body. However, anyone can get scabies, from a little baby to an adult.

Scabies is a contagious disease caused by scabies mites. A person catches scabies by having close skin contact with an infested one or by using his belongings. Kids can get scabies in kindergarten, schools and nursing homes. Scabies is not caused by playing in dirt or in mud.

Scabies is curable with simple OTC medication and prescribed medications (for severe form).

How to Know If Your Kids Have Scabies?

First of all, you should make sure that your kids have scabies. However, it is not easy to identify due to scabies’s close resemblance with other skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. It’s symptoms like itch, lesions and cluster of blisters also occur in other skin conditions.

The most obvious sign of scabies is pink to red bump appearing like pimples or bug bites. Besides, you can see a burrow on the skin which appears like a fine thread. Another symptom is itching that turns worse at night.

Check the symptoms on these body parts of your kid:

  • Between the webs of the fingers and toes
  • In the groin or genitals
  • Chest
  • In the buttocks
  • In the folds of the abdomen or waistline
  • On the neck
  • Underneath the armpits
  • Elbows
  • Wrists
  • Knees
  • Ankles



Use OTC lotion or cream for your mild symptoms. If you are not sure or situation turns worse, see your physician immediately.

How Does a Doctor Diagnose and Treat Your Child?

A doctor will observe your child’s skin for rashes and borrows. He can order for a biopsy test (scraping a skin sample) if he is not sure. Once it is established that your kid have scabies, a physician will prescribe medications including permethrin cream, Crotamiton cream, sulfur ointment and lindane lotion or cream. Oral medications like Ivermectin pills, antihistamine pill and antibiotic pill are prescribed for severe cases.

How to Use Scabies Medications on Your Child?

  • Give your child a tepid bath or shower and dry his skin gently
  • Apply the cream from the neck down, covering fingernails, toenails, body folds, inside the navel, buttock crease and between the toes
  • Let him wear the cream for 8-10 hours
  • Put the cream on his hands again if your child washes his hands during that period.
  • Wash your child thoroughly after 8-10 hours.

Repeat the treatment as per your doctor’s guidelines or as prescribed on OTC cream.


  • Make them wear new clothes after cream application
  • Wash their bedding and clothes separately
  • Seal the toys and other belongings in a bag for some days as scabies mites can’t survive longer without finding human bodies.
  • Consider a treatment for your whole family as they may be infected with no signs that take a week to occur.
  • Tell them not to scratch or pick the blisters
  • See your physician regularly according to the follow ups
  • Don’t send them to school or playground unless they overcome scabies completely.
