Here are some lifestyle changes to minimize the episode of psoriasis.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease causing thick, scaly and red skin. The common locations of psoriasis are knees, scalp, elbows, private parts and scalp. Sometimes, it occurs on the fingernails. There is no cure of psoriasis so far while the symptoms are on and off, meaning that they come and go. Medications help manage the symptoms. In rare cases, psoriasis can extend to large parts of the body.

Given that the symptoms are on and off, following precautions and lifestyle changes can help you deal with psoriasis.

Calm Down- Ease Your Stress:

Stress is one of the trigger of psoriasis as it raises the inflammation in the body. This way, it increases itch. Many patients reported to have psoriasis outbreak due to stress. Make sure to stay stress-free with the following tips…

  • Do meditation.
  • Seek the help of consultant.
  • Find support in family and friends.
  • Yoga and early morning walk can help.

Take Healthy Diet:

  • Avoid red meat and fatty snacks as they trigger flare ups.
  • Take anti-inflammatory foods like cold water fish, seeds, nuts and omega-3 fatty acids are well known to reduce inflammation.
  • Avoid alcohol as it widens the blood vessels in the skin, letting the psoriasis enter the outer layers of the skin. Even mild intake of psoriasis can worsen your problem.
  • Avoid taking junk food as it is not good for inflammatory condition. Junk foods are loaded with saturated and trans-fats, sugars and starches—all can promote inflammation. Another reason to avoid them is that they high in calories and cause weight problems. Obesity may speed up the risk of getting heart and vascular disease—two diseases that psoriasis patients are prone to.

Be Mindful of Cosmetics and Fabrics:

  • Don’t use scented bathing products like soaps or cleanser as they contain glycolic, salicylic and lactic acid. And these chemicals can increase inflammation in your sensitive skin.
  • Always buy soft and comfortable clothes. Have a feel of the cloth prior to the purchase and try to buy pure cotton products. Avoid wool and mohair. Make sure that clothes you buy are soft and comfortable.

Take Sunlight:

Did you know? Exposing to the sunlight can hinder the growth of the skin cells caused by psoriasis. Try to get some sun two-three times a week and apply a good sunscreen to keep your skin healthy.It is known as light therapy or phototherapy. Start with 5-10 minutes of sun at noon. As you are able to tolerate, increase the time by 30 seconds. Make sure all affected areas get equal and adequate exposure of the sun. The other forms of light therapyare UVB, PUVA and laser therapy.

However, it should be performed under the supervision of a physician. Make sure to avoid excess sun as it can cause sunburn and skin cancer as well. During this treatment, you may experience itch and red spots from exposure to the ultra violet light. These reactions are likely to go with continued treatment.

Use Moisturizing Lotion:

Dry skin aggravates the symptoms of psoriasis. Moisturize with creams and lotions. Petroleum jellies are efficient in locking in moisture, thanks to their oily base and thickness. Make sure to apply the cream to the top of the skin.

Avoid Medications That May Cause Flare Ups:

Drugs like lithium, propranolol and quinidine can make your psoriasis worse. Tell your doctors about the medications you are taking, including OTC.

With the help of these tips, you can minimize the occurrence of flare-ups and speed up the healing as well. See your physician if there is no improvement in your condition.
