Scabies is caused by an eight-legged parasitic mite, Sarcoptesscabiei which infests the top layer of skin to lay eggs. The mite moves under the skin during the nighttime which causes intense irritation. As a response to the mite protein, the immune system kicks-in and pimple-like rashes develop on the skin. It can take around 2-6 weeks before any visible signs of a scabies infection appear from the time of infestation. The itchy rashes mostly appear on the wrist, elbow, knee, underarms, groin, finger webbing and under breasts.
Mostly the infection spreads from skin-to-skin contact with infected person and from other places like clothes, furniture etc. where the mite is still active. Scabies mite can survive for 48-72 hours without the human host, therefore one can get infested from public places even without skin-to-skin contact.
