Sunburn can be a traumatic outcome of being in the sun for long or a tanning bed. In some cases, sunburn leads to deep, painful and extreme itching known as hell’s itch.

Severe Sunburn Itch

Also termed as fire ant itch or devil’s itch, the itch is so severe that it disturbs sleep and persists longer till the skin heals. Hell’s itch is sometimes more severe than a typical sunburn. You can experience it anywhere from 24 to 72 hours after being in the sun. Shoulders and back are the most vulnerable to sunburn itch as they are generally the most exposed area. Or these areas may not always receive enough sunscreen.

Itchiness or skin peeling after excessive sun exposure isn’t common. For some people, the itch is deep and hard to treat.

Luckily, sunburn itch can be eased with simple home remedies. These remedies also help skin heal quickly as possible. Here we have listed such effective remedies for sunburn itch.

Cool Compresses:

It is the simplest yet effective remedy to ease sunburn itch. Soak washcloth in cold water, wriggle it and apply it to the affected skin for a few minutes. You can replace the water with cool green tea or skim milk. Repeat it every 10-15 minutes.

Oatmeal Bath:

Oatmeal is a soothing remedy for several skin concerns itching, sunburns, and inflammation. It is packed with anti-itch properties that reduce the pH levels of your irritated skin. It contains phenols and flavonoids to protect the skin from UV rays. Plus, oatmeal moisturizes and softens the dried skin.

• Fill the tub with lukewarm water; add the colloidal oatmeal to the bathtub.
• Stir it well.
• Soak for 10 minutes.

Aloe Vera:

Aloe vera not only soothes the itch, but also speeds up the healing. Just peel off a fresh aloe leaf to obtain the gel like substance. Store the gel in the fridge for nearly 30 minutes. Afterwards, apply the chilled aloe vera gel on the affected parts of the skin. Let it dry so that the skin can absorb the therapeutic contents. Wash it off with lukewarm water and pat it dry with a clean towel. Or you can use OTC aloe vera gel in case you don’t have an aloe vera plant.

OTC Antihistamine:

Take an OTC antihistamine to stop itching. You can take it at night if the itch troubles your sleep. Prefer a non-drowsy antihistamine during the day. Make sure to read the instructions for dosage and use first.

Topical Creams:

To soothe itching, you can try hydrocortisone that is an OTC steroid cream for itching, redness and inflammation. Dr. Scabies skin cream is also effective for sunburn itch as it calms down your skin and heals rashes as well. It is packed with the goodness of sulfur, Vitamin E, chamomile, sesame and palm.

Coconut Oil:

Coconut oil also heals a sunburn itch. This is because its fatty acids minimize swelling and moisturize the skin. As an added bonus, it helps prevent peeling. Coconut oil can be used as a sunscreen. It is easy to use. Just apply to the affected area. Prefer organic coconut oil.

So these are the remedies to ease your sunburn itch. However, precautions are important to stop further aggravation.

• Avoid the excessive sun exposure, especially between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm.
• Wear long sleeve clothes.
• Take plenty of water to stay hydrated and minimize dryness. Or you can mix a sports drink with electrolytes.
• See your doctor if there is no improvement.
