Scabies Treatment: How Do You Treat Scabies?

Scabies is a skin infestation by the human itch mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. These miniscule scabies mites dig holes into the upper layer of the skin, lay its eggs and makes its home there. People sometimes do not always show any signs or symptoms of scabies but it doesn’t mean they don’t have it.  A person who has never had scabies may not show symptoms for 2 to 6 weeks. A person who has had scabies in the past will show symptoms as soon as 1-4 days after contact or exposure.

You may have scabies if you are experiencing itching lasting for weeks or even months and the itching sensation becomes intense at night, if you have tiny raised bumps and small burrow lines on your skin and if you have been in contact who has scabies.

This type of skin disease is highly contagious. It propagates quickly from one person to the next.  If you get scabies treatment and people who are close to you do not get scabies treatment, you can get the mites all over again. To get rid of scabies, you must treat it. The condition will not go away without scabies treatment.

Scabies treatment can include the use of medications such as:

  • Permethrin This is the most common ointment for scabies treatment. It should be applied immediately after taking a bath or before going to bed.
  • Eurax or Crotamiton – This ointment is used to prevent scabies from spreading. It is usually applied on body folds such as the under arms and between the toes.
  • Oral antihistamines – This is an oral medication for reducing the itching sensation. You should, however, consult your doctor if you are to use this on children.
  • Corticosteroid creams – This ointment if used for killing mites and reducing itchiness.

However, it is always better to choose herbal or natural scabies treatment that is safe. Even if a certain product has an active ingredient derived from plants, it doesn’t always mean it is nontoxic. Permethrin, for example, is made from plants but we have to remember there are highly toxic plants that have quantities of poison. It is true that permethrin can kill parasites but it may cause more harm than good to humans, even animals. They say only 1% of the permethrin applied is absorbed by the body but it doesn’t mean there are NO risks involved. When people’s skin gets exposed to permethrin, there may be irritation, tingling, burning and itching. At relatively high doses, neurotoxic symptoms (in mammals) include tremors, loss of coordination, hyperactivity, paralysis, and an increase in body temperature. It is also a potential carcinogen.

With all these possible side effects and risks, it is better to take the safer route. (Of course all medicines have side effects but the benefits are more important than any minor side effects.) Using SULFUR as scabies treatment is one of them.
