Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease caused by the rapid growth of the skin cells. It is characterized by red, raised patches of skin with intense itching. While psoriasis is not curable, the itchy and flaring skin occurring during psoriasis is easy to manage. All you need to make some simple changes to your skincare regimen to promote healing and flare-ups.

Keep Your Skin Moist:

It is one the simpler things you can do to ease your irritated skin. Moisturizing your skin will heal your skin and minimize dryness, redness soreness, scaling and itching associated with psoriasis.

Shop the moisturizer according to the dryness level of your skin. You can choose ointment for extremely dry skin as they are thick and efficiently lock the moisture. Besides, your moisturizer should be fragrance free.

Apply the moisturizer after taking bath or shower within 3 minutes. Reapply throughout the day or when you change clothes. It should be used on severe cold and dry days.

Tuning on humidifier is another way to keep the skin moist, especially when there is heat and dryness in the air.

Soothe With Warm Baths:

Using mild soap and taking warm bath can ease itchy patches and dry skin. Soak yourself for 15 minutes in the warm water. To enhance the healing effect, you can add oil, ground oatmeal, or sea salt to your bath. Make sure to use only warm water and mild soap. Harsh soap can aggravate your skin condition. Don’t rub your skin with the towel to dry off, instead pat dry.

Alternatively, you can compress a wet towel or cold pack on the itchy spot.

Soothe it With Sunlight:

Therefore, expose your skin to sun for two to three times a week. Make sure to wear sunscreen as too much sun can make your condition worse and tend to cause skin cancer. So, avoid excessive sun also. You should talk to your doctor for more information.

Don’t Take Stress:

Taking too much stress can raise body’s inflammation which in turns affects the outbreak. There are many things you can do to minimize your stress. Do yoga, meditation and deep breathing to for calmness. You can seek support from your family and friends.

Avoid Using Harsh Skincare Products:

Choose gentle and fragrance free skincare products. Harsh skincare products include alcohol, and acids which are not good for itchy and dry skin. Apart from that, wear clothes which are gentle on your skin. Avoid woolen clothes as they can irritate your skin with flare ups.

Don’t Scratch or Pick Your Skin:

Resist your strong urge to scratch when you feel itching. This is because scratching can break your skin, making a way for the germs. It may make your skin vulnerable to sores even if your skin doesn’t have it. Keep your nails short and take an antihistamine if you experience itchiness. Besides, close your eyes, breathe deeply and apply moisturizer to your itchy skin to avoid scratching.
