Crotamiton (Eurax)

Crotamiton is an antipruritic and scabicidal drug (for treating scabies) which is a safe over-the-counter cream for treatment of scabies in children and even for people with low immune systems. It is topical cream which needs to be applied over the affected areas.


Apply this medicinal lotion all over the body twice or three with a gap of 24 hours. For faster results, leave the medicine for 48 hours without a bath or shower. Don’t apply the medicine on face. For children below 3 years, this medicine should be applied once in a day.

Permethrin 5% (Elimite)

Permethrin is a popular insecticide and insect repellent which can effectively kill the scabies mites. This medicine is safe for children and for pregnant and breastfeeding women and even for infants as young as two months old.


Apply the cream over the whole body from neck down for a period of about 12 hours.

This cream has to be applied once in a week except in few cases where the doctor may ask you to apply it twice a week.


Lindane is a chemical variant that has been used both as an agricultural insecticide and as a pharmaceutical treatment for lice and scabies. Unfortunately, there are some health hazards involved and it generally only used when other scabies medications have failed.


This drug is available in the form of shampoo, lotion and cream. Therefore, you can follow the instructions on the bottle for using it but do consult your doctor before its application.

Lindane has to be applied only once.

People with weakened immune system, kids below 2 years of age, pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use this medicine.

Dr Scabies is an over the counter drug and also one of the popular recommendations by the doctor for treatment of scabies. The main ingredients of Dr Scabies cream are soy & Jojoba Oils, MelaleucaAlternifolia Leaf Oil and ChamomileExtracts which make it a safe and chemical free treatment method of scabies.


Simply massage the cream after c treat scabiesleaning the body. Leave it for a day and then wash off the cream. In case of irritation, consult the doctor.

Few basic tips for Scabies treatment:

  1. Cleanse the body before treatment: Before applying any medication, wash off the skin and pat it dry. A shower is good to take before applying any lotion or cream. 
  2. Disinfect all your personal belongings: Wash everything that you used the previous day including bed sheets, towels, pillow covers and everything else. 
  3. Keep your surroundings clean: Disinfect the whole house using vacuum cleaner and dispose of the waste in a plastic sealed bag. 
  4. Avoid contact with other people: this can prevent the infection from getting transferred to others. Avoid any sort of physical or sexual contact. 
  5. Treat everyone in your vicinity: All household members and recent sexual partners have to be treated equally to prevent them from getting infected.
