Hives or urticaria is a skin condition with a sudden outbreak of swollen, pale-red bumps on the skin. It is caused by an allergic reaction to any substance that you may have encountered or swallowed. Due to the allergic reaction, your body triggers histamine that further results in itching, swelling, and redness of the skin.

It can be triggered in some people due to these food items: certain foods (like nuts, peanuts, fish, tomatoes, milk, eggs, and berries), pollen, latex, certain food additives, animal dander, and insect bites or stings. Besides that, it can also occur if you’re exposed to extremely hot or cold weather.
Hives rashes may vary in different shapes and sizes and are very itchy. They appear immediately within minutes of exposure to a trigger. However, some people may have a delayed reaction of more than two hours.
While hives are very uncomfortable, they are usually harmless can disappear within a few hours or days. Regardless of that, here are some home remedies to relieve the symptoms:
1. Cold Compress
A cold compress is suggested by many allergists to treat hives. This is because cold compress can shrink blood vessels and even block further release of histamine. It helps in reducing swelling, itching, and inflammation of the skin.
Just wrap some ice cubes in a cloth. Now place the wrap on affected skin for 10 minutes at a time for three times a day. But don’t use direct ice.
You can also take a cold shower to calm your inflamed skin.
2. Baking Soda
Baking soda has anti-inflammatory properties and helps in reducing inflammation as well as itching. Hence, a good remedy for hives.
Add one-half cup of baking soda to a bathtub filled with warm water and mix it. Now soak in this water for 20 to 30 minutes.
An alternative method is to put two tablespoons of baking soda in a small bowl and add enough water to make a thick paste. Apply this paste to the affected area and leave it for 10 minutes. Rinse it off with warm water.
3. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is another good remedy for hives. It has antihistamine properties that help in reducing inflammation quickly and regulate the body’s immune system response too.
You need to add two cups of apple cider vinegar to a bathtub filled with warm water. Now look at it for 15 to 20 minutes once daily.
An alternate remedy is to dilute apple cider vinegar with an equal amount of water and use it to wash the affected area.
Oatmeal’s anti-irritating, anti-inflammatory, and soothing properties are best to treat hives.
You need to mix one cup of baking soda and two cups of ground oatmeal. Now put this mixture in your bathtub filled with warm water. Soak in this water for 15 minutes and later enjoy a soothing bath.
Apart from this remedy, you can take two cups of oatmeal, two tablespoons of cornstarch and mix with enough water. Now apply this thick paste to the affected area for 20 minutes. Wash with lukewarm water. You need to apply this remedy once daily until your skin is treated.
5. Aloe Vera
Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. So, it helps in reducing inflammation, redness, and itching caused by hives.
You can apply fresh aloe vera gel to the affected skin and leave it for 15 minutes. Wash the skin with lukewarm water. This remedy must be followed up several times of the day until your skin is healed completely.
Besides that, you can even drink two tablespoons of aloe vera juice daily. This will boost your immune system and help your body in fighting such allergens.
