Undoubtedly, antibiotics are very effective in treating various infections. But, overusing can lead to unhealthy results too.

Antibiotics are strong medicines that can kill bacteria. Sadly, we have overused antibiotics for many years due to which the bacteria today can resist antibiotics. Resistant bacteria cause infections that are harder to cure and costlier to treat.

Antibiotic-resistant infections can attack anyone and can be transferred easily. For instance, increasing number of healthy young people is getting skin infections from MRSA – bacteria that resist many common antibiotics.

The fear of overusing antibiotics is legitimate. Antibiotic drugs should strictly be taken only to treat actual bacterial infections, including sore throat, and not for common viral illnesses such as common cold and the flu. In such case, don’t push for antibiotic therapy. Plus, if your doctor provides you with a prescription, ask him/her if your body really needs it.

According to one recent study, over 25% of all casualties, antibiotic prescriptions for respiratory ailments are entirely needless. With minor infections, try to wait for a day or 2 to see if you get recovered on your own, but only if your doctor agrees. But, if the symptoms get worse, call or visit the doctor. Probably, this is the time for you to begin taking antibiotics, but often the body heals itself, particularly, if the cause is viral.

It is important to focus on ways to help manage troublesome symptoms that don’t require prescription drug therapy, such as staying hydrated and getting adequate rest. Of course, prevention is the best medicine. Remember, don’t smoke, sty physically active, eat a satisfying healthy diet, manage your stress well, and aim to get at least 7 hours of sleep each night. Plus, get the annual flu vaccine, and during cold season be sure to wash your hands regularly.

Don’t self-diagnose and buy antibiotics online. Even taking the leftover or another person’s antibiotic pills must be avoided strictly—you may do more harm than good. This could disrupt both your body’s balance of “good” and “bad” bacteria, endangering allergic reactions and more.

Why It’s Harmful to Overuse Them?

Taking antibiotics for mild infections or illnesses not only won’t work, but can also have dangerous complications over time. This practice actually helps create bacteria that are harder to kill.

Frequent or inappropriate use of antibiotics can lead to bacteria or other microbes to change, thus antibiotics don’t work against them, which is called bacterial resistance or antibiotic resistance. Treating such resistant bacteria requires higher doses of medicine or stronger antibiotics.

Antibiotic resistance is a widespread problem, one of the world’s most pressing public health problems. Today, bacteria that were once highly responsive to antibiotics have turned more and more resistant. Among those that are becoming harder to treat are pneumococcal infections that cause pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections, and meningitis, skin infections, and tuberculosis.

In addition to antibiotic resistance, those who overuse antibiotics are susceptible to other serious problems. Antibiotics kill many different bacteria even the good ones that help keep the body healthy. Also, taking antibiotics may cause a person to develop diarrhea in some cases due to lack of good bacteria that help digest food properly. In some other cases, bacteria, like Clostridium difficile (or C diff), may overgrow and cause infections.

Instead of taking antibiotics to treat infections, go for natural remedies. Try natural first. Natural Remedies are much more effective and above all. safe! Only in the extreme conditions, when every other option fails, go for antibiotics!
